Sam hung up the phone smiling now and breathing a sigh of relief.
Damn his mother for putting him on edge. He couldn’t remember the last time he was paranoid over anything and was almost insulted when Dani called him out on it.
Then he realized she was right.
“Sam, are you all done with work now?” his mother asked when she picked up on the first ring. Like she was waiting by the phone as he was for Dani’s reply.
“Just finishing up now. So you met Dani, I take it?” he asked as casually as he could. As calm as he could. Like he was in the OR and just getting ready for surgery and had all the confidence in the world.
Not like he was trying to avoid a million questions from his mother. Like who ate the last cookie as he looked pointedly at his brothers while chocolate was smeared on his face.
“I did. What a sweet young lady she is. I would have never pictured you two together. I can see why you’re just having fun right now. She looks like the type.”
He frowned. “What type is that?”
“Like you. Someone who likes to party and have a good time. Don’t get me wrong, she has to be responsible running her own business. But that is why I think you two get along.”
“Meaning what?” he asked.
“That you put so much energy into your job and she does the same. There’s no time for anything serious. It’s nice to have friends like that. That you can get a bite to eat with her now and again and hang out.”
He appreciated that his mother didn’t bring up sex like his brothers always did. Not that he thought what he had with Dani was all about sex. Sure, he wanted her all the time, but there was more to it.
“I’m confused. Why would you say that?” Did Dani leave out something? He didn’t think she would.
“No reason. We didn’t talk much. I just got the feeling you guys were friends that spent some time together. I mentioned that she should meet your father. I mean she’s met the rest of the family. But she didn’t bite. Didn’t say a word and I got the feeling she was uncomfortable with it. That’s why I think it’s just a friendship.”
“Oh,” he said. “Well, it’s early yet. Like you said, just friends for the most part. Anyway, you didn’t say anything to embarrass me, did you?”
“Of course not, Sam. We barely talked. She had a client and I was there getting my hair done. She was still working on someone when I left. I went back to say it was nice to meet her and threw in the part about dinner and meeting your father. Again, she didn’t bite. Looked pretty uncomfortable, to be honest. Those are sure signs of someone not looking for any type of commitment.”
“That’s right,” he said more firmly than he was feeling. “Glad it all worked out.”
He hung up a minute later and wondered if he was really glad at all.
